Mission Statement of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at UNL
The primary mission of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is to advance understanding and share knowledge about Earth’s interconnected systems with our stakeholders—students, the scientific community, and society at large—through diverse and cutting-edge research, inventive teaching at all levels, and dedicated public engagement. The Department strives to provide two outstanding undergraduate programs in Geology and in Meteorology-Climatology and a nationally recognized graduate program in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. At the core of our mission is a desire to contribute to scientific literacy and the development of an informed citizenry that is knowledgeable about Earth systems processes across a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. We embrace diversity of all kinds and recognize its value in advancing knowledge. Our core values and mission are sustained by a collegial faculty with diverse Earth and atmosphere system perspectives and engaged alumni, who together provide a supportive environment for the scientific growth of students and faculty alike.
