Department Statement and Commitment to Anti-Racist Action

June 2, 2020

George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery are names that have entered the national conscience following their senseless killings in recent days. They join a list of names, far too long, from throughout American history of lives cut short because of racism. As members of the diverse UNL community, the faculty of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences are concerned for our students of color. We acknowledge your pain and suffering and pledge to protect and support you and others in our community who regularly experience the effects of overt and systematic racism. We will not sit back, but will work to understand and bring about long overdue change. This begins in our own community by making certain that our colleagues, advisees, and students are safe – physically, mentally, and emotionally. We will listen – truly listen – and strive to lessen pain and anxiety in any way we can. We will also take a stand against racial injustice whenever and wherever we see it.
