Small talk often starts with the weather. For Cody Carlin, the weather is much more than small talk.
A meteorology/climatology major from Portage, Wisconsin, Carlin’s curiosity and interest in all things weather has been expanded and challenged by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He has had opportunities that have advanced his studies and solidified him as a competitive candidate for any job he may seek post-graduation. A stand out experience for Carlin was participating in a research trip with Dr. Alex Houston and his radar class. Carlin served as the trip’s videographer and documented the students’ use of the Doppler On Wheels (DOW) to gather data on thunderstorms.
“Being able to use state-of-the-art equipment to run the experiments was an amazing opportunity and gave me great hands-on experience.”
Carlin also serves as an ambassador for the college. He has shown other students the ways the university nourishes curiosity. Carlin notes this as one of his greatest achievements and is humbled to be able to advocate for the college.
As an undergraduate, Carlin has formed two key relationships with Dr. Mark Anderson and journalism Professor Trina Creighton.
“One of my strongest mentors would have to be Dr. Mark Anderson. He is my broadcast meteorology professor. He has worked with me for many hours over the last few years critiquing me and helping me get better in front of the camera.”
Both have helped Carlin realize his true potential.
“My experiences in the college are so valuable. This college offers some of the best professors in the world in their field of study, teaching young students, using state-of-the-art technology. Not only are they leading experts in their field of study, but they are just good people in general who truly want to see their students succeed.”
As far as his post graduate plans, Carlin is confident that the college has given him the tools to be successful.
“My major specific classes have put me in a good position to get a job right out of school. But the other classes I have taken through the college have really diversified my knowledge of the world, which everyone can benefit from. With all of the technology and professors that the college has to offer, it is hard not to be prepared for your career the moment you graduate.”
